The only way to see Waverly Hills is by a tour. The property is private and there are security cameras around the grounds. Waverly was reopened in 1962 as Woodhaven Geriatrics Hospital and closed in 1981 allegedlly to patient abuse. Waverly hills opens its doors in December 1912 and closed in June of 1962. However the spelling fluctuated between both spellings many times over the years. Waverly Hills Sanatorium is an old TB Hospital that has seen thousands of deaths. The Louisville City Hospital was a general hospital that cared for Louisvilleās chronic and acute curable diseases with the exception of tubercular patients. It is not known exactly when the spelling changed to exclude the second "e" and became Waverly Hills. If you are from Louisville, then you are VERY familiar with Waverly Hills. The sanatorium officially opened in 1910 and was built especially. Major Hays liked the peaceful-sounding name, so he named his property "Waverley Hill" and the Board of Tuberculosis Hospital kept the name when they bought the land and opened the sanatorium. The land that is today known as Waverly Hill was purchased by Major Thomas H. It is listed on the National Historic Register and faced the threat of being torn down.
